Next click “Browse” and select the sunflower PNG file. Then, I’ll show you how to make your own initial keychains and even turn a favorite photograph into a keychain! I’ve also included a set of measuring squares you can use to make “reference keychains” to check the amount of shrink before using new materials. All the images are available in both color and black and white versions so you can print ready to make files, or have the option of coloring in your own.

You print the pages directly onto the shrink film, let the kids color them, shrink them, and they’ve got a cute party favor to hang on their backpack! Your kids will have so much fun drawing/coloring their keychain designs and then watching their creations quickly shrink in the oven like magic. Remove your Shrinky Dinks and let them cool for a few minutes before using them to create earrings, zipper pulls, and more. I prefer using colored pencils, shrinky dink crafts which brighten during shrinkage. Fill in the design with color using coloring pencils or permanent markers.
Arteza Acrylic Paint Markers
I started experimenting- sometimes it’s worth it to spend a little time experimenting before getting the kids involved. They seem kind of magical and when I discovered there are ways to make shrinky dinks at home using #6 plastic, I started keeping my eye out for possible containers. They could have fun pictures, made up stories, or shortened versions of a favorite book. Once it was flat, I left it in for approximately another minute. Once all of us finished drawing, we put our Shrinky Dinks on a cookie sheet.
Why Shrinky Dinks Are the Perfect Winter Craft
Line a cookie sheet with some oven-proof parchment paper or foil. Once you have created your design, it’s time to cut it out. Do NOT use oil-based materials such as crayons, oil-based paints or cheap colored pencils. The clear and frosted sheets are perfect for anything where you might want to trace a pattern or design. Shrinky Dinks are super easy to use and I’m going to explain some of the ways you can create your own masterpiece!
Having said that, we did notice some alcohol markers product more vibrant colors better than others so you will have to experiment with your set and see! I have also made some Boho denim earrings that you might want to check out. If I had to choose a favourite, it would be the white Marimekko style flowers; I have the perfect floral dress to go with them. Place the plastic shapes face up with parchment paper on a baking tray.
Supplies needed to make a shrink plastic handprint keychain:
While they were still warm, I flattened each with a metal spatula. After the container is cut in half, the kids cut off the rough edges to make a flat square for drawing. You can create the look of notebook paper by drawing lines with blue and red pencils.
- Write name in Sharpie under the image or turn the paper over and write on the back if you don’t want it to show from the front.
- Colored pencils work on the rough side of the Shrinky Dink plastic and permanent markers work on either side.
- When you make your own jewelry, you can create something that perfectly matches a specific outfit.
- When you peek into the oven as your shrink film is baking, you’ll see it getting all curled up and warped, and you’ll wonder if this is actually going to work.
- Select both the circle and the offset layer of the initial.
If it does not uncurl on its own, carefully use the bottom of a glass to manually flatten it down. Place it on parchment or foil and watch the magic happen as it curls, then flattens. They will curl up on themselves and then flatten out. Keep peeking, and you can watch it curl up and flatten back out.
Keep this in mind when selecting your colors and designing your artwork. These markers provide smooth, consistent coverage and are ideal for blending colors to create intricate designs. I also like to fold the parchment paper over the baked keychains and then place a heavy book on top while they cool to make sure they finish totally flat. Wait until your item has flattened back out before you remove it from the oven. If you pull a shrinky dink out of the oven when it’s still curled up, you’ll never get it to lay completely flat, and you’ll be unhappy with the finished result. When you peek into the oven as your shrink film is baking, you’ll see it getting all curled up and warped, and you’ll wonder if this is actually going to work.

After reading through the steps, I knew I had to recreate it for Nori’s dad. Which is your favorite style? You’re done shrinking when it’s totally flat. If you see the two sides connecting and sticking, simply pause, unstick and continue.
